Gary Cameron

I started diving in 1989 because I was going on a month long trip to Cyprus in 1990 with the family. I wanted to learn to SCUBA dive before I went out on holiday, so that I didn't have to sit in a red hot classroom doing the theory stuff. So I joined a BSAC club. I also enjoyed the social side of the club system.

On my first visit to Cyprus, I got the chance to dive the wreck of the Zenobia which is one of the best wrecks I have dived. It was awe inspiring. And probably still is.

In 1999 I joined the York Sub-Aqua Club. The club has a good programme of dives scheduled and a very relaxed social side too.

Although I have my own RIB, I enjoy weekend diving with the whole group, in places like the Lake District and North Wales, where the scenery is beautiful, having a few beers and a meal in the pub. My favourite diving is UK diving. When it is good, then it is second to none.

I have just been sworn in as the Branch Diving Officer for a further year. I really enjoy diving but also enjoy the aspects of training that empower other divers to go on and enjoy the sort of diving they want to do.

I am an Advanced Diver and Open Water Instructor. I have just completed the RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster theory with the York Cruiser Training Centre, (see the links page) and endevour to get some sailing miles this year if possible. I am a BSAC Boat Handling Instructor and this year I have qualified as a Lifesaver Examiner and a Diver Coxswain Assessor. So watch out branch members.

I intend to run Lifesaver courses this year and possibly Diver Coxswain Exams within the Branch.
