Eyemouth 2005 - A New Diver's Tale

Photos and report by Alan Sparham

A tale of carrots, seagulls, and missing fins!

The day started a bit like a seagull's day, as we dragged ourselves out of the nest to look at a dull and inclement morning. However the journey north to Eyemouth improved and the sun came out making us all look forward to the coming dives.

Lesson No.1 check your kit before leaving, as I forgot my fins (can you tell that we are Novices yet?). Anyay not a problem - dive shop at Eyemouth let me borrow a pair, said to be' indestructible' (cost to buy would be £125) from South Africa, which looked very weird and were for different clubs to try out. Actually they were rubbish. Strap kept coming off, then I lost one of the straps, all this on just entering the water from the boat, so my first sea dive very exciting floating on top of the waves -good views of cliffs , seagulls , waves and oh yes the Dive Boat.

Into the boat and kitting up

To proceed, second dive a lot better used my nephews fins and again yes lost one trying to get back into the dive boat. Not very lucky up to now, then one of our other colleagues Darren lost his mask overboard, so up to now the cost of dive going nicely. Had to hire fins for the two of us so that we could continue diving the following day. Enough about cost!

Ready to go and into the water!

The boat Northern Star and skipper were great and very professional. Helpful good service, hot drinks onboard, cake & good weather made the diving very enjoyable. Would highly recommend we use again. Second day the sea was fairly choppy. Dave tried to give us an onboard meal (casserole with plenty of carrots. You would not think so much could be ejected from a body that size? ) We all declined. First time I have seen everyone get kitted up so quick.

Dive over, back to base for beers and swapping stories about the dive!

Saturday night was excellent. We met up, had a few drinks to end the days diving discussing who had seen this and that finished the evening nicely. Finally we as novices would like to say thank you for the time and effort put in by the more experienced divers into making this a great weekend away and look forward to doing it sometime again in the future.
